Flash floods are common in the desserts, and can occur within a few minutes or hours of excessive rainfall, often associated with thunderstorms.
Flash floods are powerful and can roll boulders, tear out trees, and scour out new channels.
During our tour of the states last year, my husband and I visited several stunning slot canyons that had been carved out over decades of these flash floods. They were stunning, and some sections were so deep that we could barely see the sun anymore as we wandered through them.
While flooding can be incredibly destructive, it can also help spread organic material, nutrients, and sediments which enrich floodplain soils. Over time if flood events become a part of the natural cycle, plants and animals will adapt to flood-prone environments and the functioning of those ecosystems.
The way flooding has an incredible impact, either for good or for harm, is remarkably reminiscent of our thought life. With our thoughts we create patterns, carve out ruts in our thinking, create new paths for ourselves, or cement old ones…. We can remove obstacles and begin to spread life-giving motivation for ourselves, or drown in our hopelessness as we revisit unhealthy belief systems.
What kind of thinking are we going to have when life’s storms apply pressure. I want to water hope, expectancy, gratitude, love, peace and joy in my thought life. What kind of thinking do you want to water?
