One of the first months that my husband and I were married, we took a week long forest hopping trip. The west coast has a rich biodiversity and is peppered with beautiful forests. We were in the honeymoon phase, but our lives were full of work responsibilities and we felt a desperate need to retreat into nature and keep cocooning as we developed our intimacy.
On our first night away we had driven to Muir Woods to camp on Mount Tamalpais, but it showered buckets of rain so instead of setting up our tent we had to hunker down in the back of our Prius. I recall waking up early the next morning to a soft, gloomy light that sifted through the fog and rain drops. I remember feeling safe, and satisfied. Because we had taken time away, we had found stillness, calm and connection. We spent many days on that mountain in our first year of marriage, hiking, camping, talking and just being together. It grew to be a place where we cultivated moments of sweet connection.
We all have our mountains (or places) where we retreat to when we are needing to breathe & recalibrate. These places become saturated in memories of moments we pulled away, refocused, and reconnected; these accumulated moments make a place sacred.
