Wapiti is the Shawnee word for Elk. Excluding Moose, Wapiti are the largest of the deer family. The flying Elk is a symbol of larger than life dreams. While the sunset is symbolic of an end; the letting go, putting things to rest or pausing till a reset takes place the following day with the sunrise.
When I painted this, it was during a stunning sunset in Montana, nearly 6 months into our van trip. We had left the Bay Area, along with many hopes and dreams. Gradually throughout the trip we had been letting go of promises and dreams in order to heal and allow room for new dreams to grow in our hearts. The point at which I painted this felt like a pivotal moment, a tangible feeling, as though we were watching the sun set on our larger than life dreams. I truly feel like this is just a pause on many promises we will revisit some day, but for now we’ve loosed our hold and let the sun set on our wapiti of a dream.
